My Sermons
I’ve done it!
Last week, I reached that magic number! 100 subscribers to ride along with me on this wild and crazy adventure! Go me! Yea! Yippee! OK... now what? I guess I have to keep your attention till the end of time. Since I’ve conquered my first 100 subscribers, now I’m greedy and want more. Help me out – share my articles with your moms, friends, coworkers, husbands! My ultimate hope is to reach and touch as many people as I can through my writing. And if just one of my pieces goes viral… well, bucket list complete!
When I was in college, I wanted to be a rabbi. No joke. I was inspired by the thought of being a community leader; I prided myself on being a scholar of Judaica, both ancient and modern; and I was equally intrigued and soothed by the ritual of the liturgy. I was really into it. Unfortunately, my plans were derailed, but I’m OK with that because I’m quite content with where I ended up.
One thing that was the cause of some concern when I contemplated my future as a rabbi was the thought of having to give a weekly sermon. How was I going to be able to think of something new and original to talk about each and every week? How would I keep it relatable and engaging for my congregants? Would they even care about what I have to say? How would I keep them coming back for more? Well, my dear and loyal followers, I’m having that same dilemma nowadays with my writing. While I’m devoted to creating fresh and appealing content on a weekly basis, I live in constant fear of coming up empty.
It’s a conundrum. On the one hand, I’m eager now to go far beyond 100. But then I’m kept awake at night by the thought that once I’ve gained an enviable number of followers who are anticipating my weekly publications, I’ll run out of awesome things to say! So, I’m going to ask you, my congregants, to assist me in the process.
Oftentimes now, during conversation with friends, they’ll randomly shout out with delight, “That’s an article!” It doesn’t matter what we’re talking about. Every subject seems to have the potential to become a thesis. My aim is to pontificate for a bit on a topic and then add a moral or emotional component, a takeaway to keep you thinking long after you’ve finished reading. Very much like a sermon indeed.
So please, I’m interested in your ideas. Let’s try something fun together. Leave a comment below, or privately by email, about an idea or issue that you think I may be able to spin into an interesting and entertaining read. I’ll even give you a shout out in the article if that appeals to you. I appreciate that not everyone enjoys being in the limelight as much as I do, so let me know if you’d like to keep your identity on the downlow and I’ll respect that. My goal here is three-fold:
1) to keep you riveted by my writing;
2) to entice you to return here each week; and
3) to encourage you to share my articles with everyone you know!
My dream of being a rabbi may have been quashed, but I can still hope to reach the multitudes through my publications. I’m truly inspired by the heartfelt comments and uplifting support I receive each week. You make me feel like I’ve found my niche. While I may not have a congregation, I have certainly gained a community.
Thank you.
